‘Govt should start MCH in Urogynaecology’
By Vikas Vaidya
After completing her post graduation she
was working in a hospital in rural area, there she realised need and
necessity to improve the competency and skill with reference to urinary
system which is very close to genital tract. There she felt that the
super specialisation is needed in urogynaecology. She then went on to
acquire MCH in urology when she had already done Gynaecology post
graduation.
Dr N Rajamaheshwari the first lady
Urogynaecologist in the country has urged Government to start super
specialisation in Urogynaecology. She is in city to deliver lecture
organised by Nagpur Obstetrics and Gynaecological Society (NOGS). There
is some emotional reason behind her acquiring super speciality skills in
urogynaecology. But that was not the only reason behind her efforts to
request government to start super specialisation in urogynaecology. Dr
Rajamaheshwari retired from Government hospital in 2002. According to
her what she was learning in 1980 has no connection with what she is
practicing now.
Dr Anuradha Ridhorkar, President of NOGS
said, “Female urology is something different and was not realised
earlier. Dr Rajamaheshwari came forward and pioneered this particular
speciality. She felt that there was a lacuna in the curriculum as
gynaecology means doing delivery and handling uterus related problems
while urologist means one who deals with urinary problem. They never had
an opportunity to work more into female genital tract problem.
Dr Rajamaheshwari thought that she
should equip herself. she did fellowship in female urogynaecolgy and
reconstructive surgery in UK. She came back and started offering
services to Government. At the same time she offered her services to the
economically backward class through Government institutions. “We
started training doctors with a view that they would go back to their
respective states and teach others. We have a national urogynaecology
society having affiliation from international society,” pointed out Dr
Rajamaheshwari.
Dr Rajameheshwari did not stop here. She
started training others. She conducts operative workshop. This has been
going since last 17 years. City gynaecologist Dr Anuja Bhalerao had
been to Chennai who found herself complete change in her practice. Dr
Anuradha Ridhorkar said, “Vision gets changed completely. Vaginal
surgery still a domain of gynaecology but Dr Rajamaheshwari added value
to it.” Dr Rajamaheshwari will be performing procedure live for urinary
incontinence, on Sunday, at CARE hospital at Hotel Centre Point.
