Now onwards, Scholarship to Government, granted colleges on priority

Throughout the year, the scholarship issue kept haunting educational institutions in Maharashtra. At the end of the admission process too, Government has given another shock to them. Now, Government has brought another rule by which scholarship will be given to the students who are studying in Government and granted colleges on priority. It should be noted that there are more number of beneficiary students studying in unaided colleges than their counterparts in the granted ones.
Most of the unaided colleges especially professional ones are facing financial crunch as less number of students are turning up towards them. To add to their woes the scholarship amount to be reimbursed against the tuition fees of reserved category students is still pending with the Government. Most of the colleges, especially technical institutions have failed to pay salaries of the staff for the last over six months. Some of them have borrowed money to run the institutions.
With the new rule of ‘granted colleges...’ in, the colleges will have to suffer more. In Maharashtra 90% colleges are unaided and they are dependent on the students receiving scholarship. The number of students is negligible in aided and Government institutes as compared to those in private institutes. Probably, Government has ignored this aspect, said one owner of a college.
Government has brought one more clause wherein the institutions have to keep their scoring high. The new rule focuses on the quality and academic enhancement of the institutions. As per the new rule, the students who take admissions in the institutions whose result is below 50% will not get the benefit of scholarship. The institutions registering 50 per cent or more result can only claim scholarships.
The circular has one more new rule that would twist the arm of the colleges. This rule says, the students admitted through Centralised Admission Process (CAP) only will get the scholarship benefit. The students admitted through the institute level round will not be eligible to get the scholarship.
