The relatives of a 6-year-old kid who died during her treatment at Indira Gandhi Government Medical College and Hospital (IGGMCH), vandalized the hospital on Monday. The victim, Alina Khan aged 6 years, was admitted to the hospital two days ago as she suffered from muscle weakness.
The girl was kept in Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) as she was diagnosed with a rare disease called as Guillain–Barré syndrome (GBS). It is a rapid-onset muscle weakness caused by the immune system damaging the peripheral nervous system. Dr Leena Dhande was treating her. The doctors had appraised the relatives about the severity of the disease and how critical Alina was.
On Monday morning Alina became paralytic and after few hours she died. Her mother was watching all her stages. She got angry and broke the glass of PICU.
Sensing the aggression of the relatives team of doctors present there called Dean Dr Sandhya Manjrekar who immediately reached near ward number 7.
Victim’s maternal uncle Salman Shahi (aged 29) took out knife and tried to attack doctors. The security persons of Maharashtra State Force reached the spot. One of the securitymen Prabhudas Rathod tried to stop Salman, but he hit Rathod on head by knife. Salman did not stop there. He went ahead and damaged ventilator. The aggression of relatives compelled other parents to run away from the PICU with their babies. Along with Dean Dr Sandhya Manjrekar, MSF officials Jagdeo Akhle, Ramesh Taidhe, Raju Patil and Tanaji Kumar tried to pacify the relatives but it went in vain.
Another securityman Sudhakar Sapate too reached spot but Salman was in no mood to listen to anybody. Other securitymen gathered and hold Salman. Meanwhile Mayo administration called police who after reaching Mayo, brought situation under control. Tahsil police on the complaint of security guard Prabhudas Rathod arrested Salman Shahid and registered offences under sections 353, 333, 427 of IPC R/w section 135 of Bombay Police Act.
What is GBS?
Guillain–Barré syndrome (GBS) is a rapid-onset muscle weakness caused by the immune system damaging the peripheral nervous system. Elaborating the disease noted Neurophysician Dr Chandrashekhar Meshram told The Hitavada, “It is a neurological disorder. GBS is a virus that can create trouble into anybody’s body. It weakens the muscles of the patients. The treatment is to be taken very patiently. But many things are not in doctor’s hands. During the acute phase, the disorder can be life-threatening, with about 15% developing weakness of the breathing muscles requiring mechanical ventilation. Function of the autonomic nervous system gets damaged leading to abnormalities in heart rate and blood pressure.
