Primary Surveillance Radar System at Nagpur Airport to strengthen ATC

Primary Surveillance Radar System at Nagpur’s Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar International Airport will strengthen the already equipped Air Traffic Control (ATC). The existing old system will continue to serve but Doppler Very High Frequency Omni Range (DVOR) will be added to its kitty apart from other equipment.
DVOR is a standard International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) ground based radio navigational aid that provides bearing information to aircraft to define air traffic control routes for en-route, terminal and instrument approach/departure procedures. DVOR when collocated with DME (Distance Measuring Instrument) provides both the angle and slant distance of aircraft with respect to ground station.
Yudhishthir Sahu, General Manager, Air Traffic Management (ATM), Airport Authority of India at Nagpur said, “ The land identification for the new system is done. It will be erected on the land situated behind office of  India Meteorological Department (IMD) for which tenders have already been floated. The new system will not only be accurate in noticing everything that is being done now but also it can point out the mistake if committed by pilot. Be there be radar in the aircraft or not, the new system will guide that aircraft too.”
The ATC plays an important role as far as safety of aircraft and passengers is concerned. Nagpur ATC has a vast area under it and it has maintained that accuracy. It has 72 flights to and fro at Nagpur. The number of flights moving in Nagpur sky has rose to 1,360 in 2018 from 1,062 in 2016. ATC is ready to do surveillance of 500 scheduled flights, pointed out Roshan Kamble, Joint General Manger of ATM.
The Civil Navigation System at Nagpur is well equipped and the unit here in fact train other city airport staff. The system will soon have Standard Instrument Departure or Arrival (SID and SIA). A SID is an air traffic control coded departure procedure that has been established at certain airports to simplify clearance delivery procedures. SIDs are supposed to be easy to understand. It will keep aircraft away from terrain, it is optimized for air traffic control route of flight and will not always provide the lowest climb gradient. It strikes a balance between terrain and obstacle avoidance, noise abatement (if necessary), and airspace management considerations.
Nagpur ATC is also capable of training other ATCs in other cities for Automatic Dependence Surveillance Broadcast (ADSB) that can track aircraft, radar. The Nagpur ATC is the only one in the country that do the repairing, overhauling work of ADSB.

Drones to fly Nagpur sky by December

The drones will start flying officially in Nagpur sky by December. There are several agencies that give permissions to drones. They include State Government authorities, civic authorities, police department, Directorate General Civial Aviation (DGCA) through Airport Authority of India (AAI). Nagpur airport received several querries regarding drones. It will become official and legal in Nagpur.
