City Students develop Live GPS Tracking system - FLEET

Do you remember, in one of the movies of Transporter movie series, heroine has a mobile ladden with Global Positioning System (GPS). The villain keep a track on the path of heroine wherever she goes. The hero realises it and finally throws the mobile outside the car resisting villains from approaching them. On the same lines, a group of students developed GPS Tracking System. This can track the location of mobile phones using GPS Technology. GPS satellites help in positioning of the different GPS receivers on the surface of the earth. Locations are represented in the form of geographical coordinates called Latitudes and Longitudes.
Satyajeet Kanetkar, Nilesh Kolharkar, Kapil Kokarde, Sushil Kewlani developed this project under the guidance of Meeta Kalashikar.
The project in it's current condition is capable of performing a live demonstration. The current implementation uses Android mobile phones. The students claim that the project is a solution to both industry problems and society need. This product will help the freight operators to track the location of their trucks, cars and other transport vehicles. Industries, businessmen and entrepreneurs can use this product to keep a track of their valuables while they are in transportation. It enables the use of accurate time stamps, speed, altitude and other data for proper reporting. The project is mainly used to track multiple vehicles at a time. These can be cargo vehicles, emergency vehicles, public transport and even individual persons.

Applications of FLEET

-It is very useful for freight management and transport authorities as it provides real time data regarding the location of vehicles on the globe. All kinds of data such as distance, speed and millisecond resolution timestamps are available for use in auditing and recording purposes.
-It can effectively deployed in emergency vehicles such as police vans, ambulances and fire brigades. So when the control cell gets a call, the closest vehicle can be automatically deployed. Hence lives and property can be saved more effeciently.
-After the recent incidents in Delhi, women's protection has become a vital issue. Any woman who owns an android phone can just download the application and register with the service.
-In case of suspicious neighbourhoods, the woman can just start tracking and inform her relatives. Her relatives can then find out where she is going and rush to her help if something does go wrong.

Advantages over existing versions of the model
The group has claimed that this model will be useful to people who have to transport valuable goods.
It will help them in keeping a check on whether the transportation is taking place properly.
The model is easily deployable for common people as it works on top of GPS capable Android mobile phones. It generates a live view on the map showing the location of the subject.
It uses web based application and hence can be viewed from any computer around the world.

Project appreciated by all

This technology of tracking through GPS is though not new but being developed by students is the unique point. This project stood second in the project competition organised by Maharashtra State Board of Technical Education (MSBTE). They stood first in the competition organised by Gaikwad Patil College of Engineering. This project also got award at DEEPEX organised by Srujan. It was appreciated by none other than Father of Param Super Computer Padmashri Dr Vijay Bhatkar and judged by Anand Deshpande of Persistent Systems.
