Both are specialists in Ophthalmology. Both have Maharashtra connection. Both are working L V Prasad Eye Institute. Both are doing great work in their respective superspecilities but both are equally modest as it is said that a tree laden with fruits always bends low. Both endeavor with a vision to give sight to visually impaired people. Both are in Nagpur to be a part of ‘Captivating Cornea’, a “Live Surgical Workshop & CME” on the latest technologies in corneal transplantation organised by Department of Ophthalmology, NKPSIMS on Sunday, May 19.
Internationally acclaimed Dr Somasheila Murthy and Dr Varsha Rathi strongly feel that the organ eye is ignored and there is less awareness about eye donation. Dr Murthy said that about 2 million people needed sight and only 20,000 eyes were collected every year. Injury is the common reason for corneal damage. Apart from that the aging process, the lifestyle changes or various internal diseases cause eye damage, added Dr Murthy.
Dr Varsha Rathi who did her graduation and postgraduation from Nagpur University pointed out, “One Cornea can give sight to two person. It means two eyes can give sight to four persons.”
Dr Varsha Rathi and Dr Murthy said, “Lack of awareness about eye donation is the major problem. At first it was Aishwarya Rai who was made brand ambassador for eye donation awareness and later Superstar Amitabh Bachchan. But after that Government did not take much efforts. Second and most important part is how many eye banks we have which can be said to be well-equipped? It needs a proper transportation, eye collection centre, trained team. The team should reach the body within six hours.”
Dr Murthy said that the legal issue was another significant part. In India without the consent of the relatives, the eyes of the dead person cannot be removed. In China, they donot need permission. The country like China is doing extremely well as far as eye donation is concerned. Eye Bank Association is making representations in this regard, informed Dr Murthy.
LV Prasad Eye Institute is not only perform a huge number 225-300 corneal transplants every year but it spreads awareness about eye donation.
While Dr. Murthy is Chief of Cornea Services at LV Prasad, the areas of interest of Dr. Rathi are excimer laser surgery. She is also the coordinator for the Institute’s acclaimed Indian Contact Lens Education Programme (ICLEP). Both agreed that the habit of handling eye since birth plays an important. Parents should teach their wards how to take care of eye. The children should become habitual of handling eye properly.
When it was brought to their notice that the coordination  among doctors lacking. Like when a person gets detected with Type II diabetes, his physician should tell him to approach immediately to Ophthalmologist. This does not take place and which is why in some cases the person may lose eye though gradually.
