IGGMCH loses 90 seats, Vidarbha gets only 50 seats more
By Vikas Vaidya
It is good news that each of eight medical colleges in Maharashtra got 50 seats more, but Vidarbha got only 50 seats more. It has four medical colleges but got additional intake in Yavatmal college only. Neither Akola, nor Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) did not get a single additional seat. In the process, Indira Gandhi Government Medical College and Hospital (IGGMCH) lost not 40, but 90 seats.
The present intake of IGGMCH is 60. It is getting 40 seats restored for the last 16 years. Had the state government acted fast the intake would have reached to 100 and in present development it would have got 50 seats more making it to 150. It would not have to struggle for 40 seats forever.
The state government has increased the intake of students by 400 for MBBS course in eight government medical colleges from this academic year. The governing board of the Medical Council of India (MCI) has given the nod to hike MBBS seats by 400 at the government medical colleges in Kolhapur, Sangli, Nanded, Latur, Ambejogai, Yavatmal, Dhule and Solapur. It was in the year 2002, when the state started three medical colleges (in Kolhapur, Latur and Akola) with an intake of 300 students. While the intake of MBBS students in medical colleges at Ambejogai, Dhule and Nanded rose to 100 from 50, the remaining five will see 150 students being admitted, up from the previous 100. The Ambejogai medical college was established in 1975 with 50 MBBS seats, and the medical colleges in Dhule, Yavatmal and Nanded were started in 1989, with 150 MBBS seats. The new seats have been approved by the MCI under a scheme for medical colleges which are over 10 years old and have an intake of 100 and 50 seats.
New medical colleges to be
run on Gujarat pattern
Government has planned and declared six medical colleges in Maharashtra State. They include Satara, Nandurbar, Gondia, Chandrapur, Alibag, Baramati. It is said that these colleges will be run on Gujarat pattern. In Gujarat, the Government there has created a society that is handling all the affairs of new medical colleges. Maharashtra Government has also planned the same thing. These new six medical colleges will have financial and all kind of backing from State Government. These colleges will not get funds from Central Government. At the same time these colleges will not have 15 per cent All India quota. After establishment of these colleges, 600 more MBBS seats will be added to the present intake of 2000.
parents don’t want NEET
In the wake of Apex Court’s judgement too, Medical Council of India (MCI) is insisting on going for National Eligibility Entrance Test (NEET) for admissions to health science courses. MCI’s governing body is unanimous on conducting NEET. But most of the parents in Maharashtra are not in favour of NEET. They want State CET or PMT back. There is a general impression that NEET will have base of CBSE and most of the State students fail to compete with CBSE students. In other CET’s it has been noticed that CBSE students scored over all other students. With this fear, parents opposing NEET.
