Want promotion? Increase your CR grade: DMER’s new policy

By Vikas Vaidya

With 500 more seats are being added to the kitty of Maharashtra, Medical Education department is in hurry to promote the medical teachers. One of the criterions needed to promote, is grade in Confidential Report (CR). Reliable sources told The Hitavada that Directorate of Medical Educatin and Research has shockingly asked these teachers to increase gradation to atleast A in CR by respective Heads of departments (HoDs).
Government Medical Colleges (GMC) in Maharashtra are already running short of enough number of medical teachers. To add to it now 500 more seats will be added. Naturally medical teachers would be needed in more number. So DMER has taken up the work of recruiting the teachers and promoting the existing ones.
According to sources, around 97 teachers were called to Mumbai. Some of them had A or A+ grade but some got B or B+ grade CR. Sources disclosed that Director had asked the teachers with B or B+ grade to approach their respective Heads and get increase the CR grade to A or A+ so that there would not be any obstacle in doing promotion.
This has created too many issues. Now most of the HoDs have decided not to increase the grade as it was given after proper evaluation of the teacher. To this, sources said that teachers have been asked to take signature of Dean and counter signature would be made by Director himself. HoDs have taken strong objection to this. They argued that grade would not be increased and threatened to go to court if DMER insist.

Retirement age from 62 to 63

Directorate of Medical Education and Research (DMER) is seriously thinking of increasing retirement age from 62 to 63. Dr Pravin Shingare confirmed the development. The reason he cited is again the short of manpower. This is creating resentment among medical teachers. Maharashtra State Medical Teachers Association (MSMTA) has opposed the move. It said that this would hamper the chances of young doctors to get jobs. Secondly the reflexes gets reduced with the increase in age. With the ageing, most of the people experience low at mental level. This decrease the quality in treatment to the patients. The age should not be increased, demanded MSMTA.

Student is heading his teacher

Confusion reigned supreme the policy of promotion of medical teachers, due to which some of the medical teachers are working as Associate Professor for over 16 years while those in private medical teachers are getting promoted regularly. In some cases the student who has taken education from a particular department became Professor to head the department. This is happening because the teachers are joining private medical colleges and after getting fast promotion there, joining GMCs as Professor to head the department. The present Director Dr Pravin Shingare too came through private medical college got promoted, sources said. The teachers in GMCs who are working day and night are not getting promotions, are feeling frustrated. According to one very senior teacher this would bring down the quality of teaching in GMCs.

Transfer of doctors

The medical teachers who have completed five years of existence have been transfered to other Government Medical Colleges (GMCs). From Nagpur two teachers including Dr Wasudev Barsagade, Associate Professor of Anaesthesia department, GMCH has been transfered to GMC, Ambejogai. Dr Makrand Vyawahare, Associate Professor, Forensic Medicine of GMC has been transfered to GMC, Akola while Dr Anand Mukherjee from Akola has been tranfered to GMC, Nagpur. Dr Sangita Shelke, Associate Professor of Pharmacology of Pune has been transfered to Yavatmal. Dr Sudhir Pandit, Associate Professor, Anatomy of Yavatmal will join at Akola GMC. Dr Pratibha Patil, Associate Professor, Anatomy of Aurangabad has been transfered to Yavatmal. Dr Nandkishor Aswar, Associate Professor of Pharmacology of Nanded has been transfered to Akola.
