The high sensitivity blood test to know troponin level which helps in detecting heart attack early if ECG fails to show signs will be available in Nagpur soon. The test is affordable as its cost will be same as that of present test.
Explaining about this high sensitivity blood test, well-known Cardiologist Dr Jaspal Arneja said, “As per the protocols fixed by American Heart Association (AHA), we see whether patients have chest pain, accordingly we do ECG, if ECG do not show any indications but still there are symptoms then we check cardiac enzymes through blood test which shows troponin level. The report of this test usually takes 6 hours. It was a routine practice.”
Dr Prashant Jagtap, noted Interventional Cardiologist with Wockhardt Hospital said, “Usually, within six hours of having a heart attack, most people will have increased Troponin levels and after 12 hours, almost all the heart attack patients will have raised Troponin levels. If Troponin levels are low, then the risk of a heart episode even for the next 30 days and quite often up to six months is less.”
Dr Arneja pointed out, “Now high sensitivity blood test aimed at finding the presence of a protein known as Troponin in the patient’s blood early. It has lowered down the time of detection to one hour. It means the heart ailment can be detected within one hour of the beginning of chest pain, if the test is done that time. If detection is done fast then naturally we can treat patients early and he or she could be saved from further damage.”
In a recent UK study, which was funded by British Heart Foundation, the results of which were published in The Lancet, researchers said that they have identified the optimal level of Troponin that could rule out heart attack for two-thirds of patients who are brought to emergency wing.
According to Dr Arneja, the routine Troponin tests are being done quite commonly and help doctors to decide on patients stay at hospitals.
Dr Vikas Bisne, Head Cardiologist with Meditrina Hospital said, “These tests are undertaken to find the Troponin levels in blood. When heart muscles are damaged, they release troponin which enters into blood and causes heart ailment. Usually doctors prescribe test twice to doubly make sure about the troponin levels.”
Dr Arneja said, “Having normal Troponin levels 12 hours after the chest pain starts means a heart attack in the near future is unlikely.”
