Politician-Prisoner gets VIP treatment in GMCH

The special and privilaged treatment given by Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) at Nagpur to ex-MLA, who is arrested in connection with a financial fraud on the orders of High Court, has raised eyebrows of several activists who have questioned the decision of hospital administration for extending such a hospitality to an accused.
Khamgaon police had arrested former Congress MLA Dilip Sananda in relation to a corruption case pertaining to award of a contract for constructing the Khamgaon Municipal building in Buldhana and as it happen in cases involving such high-profile persons, Sananda complained of ill-health and after spending five days in police custody, he was taken to GMCH for medical examination and lodged in a paid ward, in violation of established norms.
The former Congress MLA initially evaded arrest in the case after his anticipatory bail plea was rejected by the Nagpur bench of Bombay High Court, but after exhausting all legal remedies was forced to surrender.
Sananda developed some problem in spine so he was brought to Akola’s Government Medical College. The doctors there advised him to get MRI done. Since the MRI is not installed at Akola GMC, Sananda was refered to Nagpur GMCH.
Ironically, the MRI at Nagpur GMCH was not functioning so he requested GMCH administration to admit him till the MRI is done. Surprisingly, GMCH administration accepted his request and admitted him. Moreover, Sananda appealed the administration to keep him in paying ward and according to sources, Superintendent allowed him to do so. When MRI started functioning, the department gave him the date of February 29 citing the reasons that his case was not an emergency since medically more serious patients were in queue.
On one hand the poor and needy patients are staying in the wards which are in shambles. Despite efforts to spruce up the hospital, most of the beds in general wards do not have proper bedsheets but these needy patients do not have a choice but to meekly accept the reality and stay at GMCH. But Sananda, a prisoner was immediately shifted to the paying ward. How hospital administration shifted him to paying ward when he is a prisoner, is the million dollar question which many social activists have raised. One has to pay extra money to stay in paying ward and Police can not afford that extra money. Still it has been done in case of Sananda.
According to sources some Congress leaders met him in the hospital and enquired about his health but thankfully nobody pressurised administration for Sananda’s arrangement. But, according to activists in know of things, administration is walking the extra mile to provide all facilities to Sananda, who was very powerful in earlier regime and was in news mostly for wrong reasons.
