AICTE takes step to build student-teacher relationship

By Vikas Vaidya

The Central Project Unit of All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has created a module to build student-teacher relation in technical institutions of the country. This module will not only help in building this relationship but it will also become a guiding force for the institutions to enhance the quality of teaching, this is what AICTE feels.
The technical institutions in the country are facing so many problems. They include rising vacancy, degradation of quality, student-faculty ratio, method of teaching. Considering all these aspect into consideration, AICTE has taken this step. This module will try to inculcate human values among students.
The Central Project Unit of Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) headed by its Advisor Dr P M Khodke has prepared modules. They started imparting training to teachers of technical institutions with a view that these teachers would pass it on to students. There are several problems from teacher as well as student side. Most of the teachers feel that the blackboard teaching is best while students believe in mobile contents. In most of the engineering colleges teachers post all study material on mobile and students find it easy. AICTE does not oppose both ways of teaching but it wants confluence of the same.
Dr Khodke told ‘The Hitavada’ on phone from Delhi, “Students have several personal problems and they do not have anybody with whom they can share them. Many time that frustration too reflect into result and other complications. To prevent it we will be asking colleges to create groups led by the mentor-- teacher. Every group will be of 20 students and have one teacher as mentor. These groups will help students to get befriend with each other. We assume that since the students will have closer ties in group, they might get open up and share problems.”
These groups will also help students to understand each other. Secondly, in the beginning of session the module has a plan to teach human values to students. These human values teachings will bring change in the attitude of the students.
“In the initial phase, the students will be asked to play the game, they are interested in. They will do Yoga. The classes will be held but at primary level. There will be blackboard as well as digital teaching. Many students can not speak English and they find it difficult while facing competitive examinations during their final phase of the graduation. The classes for Communication English too will be conducted. The students will be asked to play musical instrument that would help them to learn stress sustenance. This will go on for first 15 days. Gradually the hard course will begin,” informs Dr Khodke.
A meeting in this regard will be held on October 26 to be attended by Vice-Chancellors of all 17 technical universities wherein the final course of action would be decided. But this module will be mandatory for the technical institutions all over the country to be implemented from the academic year 2018-19.
