‘Listen to adolescents, promote their positive sides’

Cut throat competition, nagging, lack of love, comparison making your child feel insecure, depressed

By Vikas Vaidya

Stress is on rise, parents’ communication with their children has come to zero, they do not communicate but nag their wards, cut-throat competition in the outer world making innocent children feeling suffocated, insecure. The comparison with other children by their parents taking them to depression. This can be stopped if parents would start listening to their wards and promote their positive sides instead of hammering them on bad acts. They should not treat their wards as problem child
Adolescent Health Academy (AHA), Nagpur  a branch of Indian Academy of Pediatrics (IAP) working exclusively in the field of ‘Physical and mental being’ of adolescents had organised a training programme on problems of adolescents  on Sunday at Vanamati.
Dr J S Tuteja, National Chairperson of AHA and Dr Preeti Galagali, Adolescent Physician and Consultant Paediatrician conducted two important sessions. Both while talking to The Hitavada threw light on various aspects of problems being faced by adolescents and their solution.
Dr Tuteja is of the opinion that parents’, teachers’ involvement in the proper growth of a child is very important. According to him education should be imparted to all. Vocational education can play a vital role. Dr Tuteja feels that technology was good but advancement in it was making problem more deep.
“Stress is on rise. Single child at home is making matter worse. Both parents are out for the job, the communication is missing, parents-child relationship is ending. Sexuality is on rise. But parents, teachers and paediatricians can save society. We as AHA training our paediatricians how to teach parents about dealing with children and it is bringing some positive changes,” pointed Dr Tuteja.
“Conflicts with the children of the parents are on rise. Mother is busy watching TV. Parents dont have time. This should be changed,” appealed Dr Galagali.
Dr Galagali feels that problem does not lie with child only. She counsels parents as well as child. According to Dr Galagali the child’s problem cant be resolved without parental support.
“Dont nag them. Dont make any comparison. On the contrary, tell them how good they are. Appreciate them at least for four times a day. Dont ask them to do certain things if they dont wish to. Leave some decisions to the children,” said Dr Galagali.
Dr Galagali told one interesting and informative fact. She said, “In our brain, there is a judgement centre which gets developed between 21-25 years of age. In my opinion we should understand that before attaining that age child cant judge certain things. We try to imbibe certain constructive things like good manners, facts about behaviour etc since the age of 7 years. It would make them good human being. They have Emotional Centre as well as Reward Centre. We should groom them in a y swao that they should be able to sustain peer pressure. We should give rewards to them for their good deeds.

Comments

  1. It is a good way to provide them with a platform to express themselves and acknowledge their strengths and potential. This approach encourages healthy communication, builds trust, and helps adolescents navigate challenges effectively, ultimately contributing to their overall well-being and societal growth. Children mostly need guidance at this age. So, it is important to communicate with them actively and listen to their point of view. It makes a better understanding among parents and children.
