Suresh Shetty says, State intelligence services to locate doctors involved in sex determination

Suresh Shetty, Maharashtra’s Minister of Public Health in a high level meeting held in Mantralaya asked officials not to spare those who violate Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (PCPNDT) act. 
In the meeting several measures were decided which might fetch far reaching results. The minister emphasized to all the official in public health department to be proactive and asked them to see that the violators of PCPNDT act are not spared. It was also decided to request the Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan to provide all logistical help in the statewide drive to check the violators of this act and book them speedily and try to punish them at the earliest. The meeting also discussed doctors who were caught in determining sex of the fetus in sting operations. Henceforth, it was decided that there will be better collaboration between the state nodal agency and Maharashtra Medical Council (MMC).
State nodal agency would depute officers to reinforce the prosecution by the government at the Maharashtra Medical Council. The intelligence services of the state government will be used to identify and locate the doctors who are involved in the heinous crime sex determination resulting in female feticide. There will be stringent monitoring of IVF centers and the issue of pre-conception technique with sex selective fertility measures will be also looked in to. The district level committees will constitute local Indian Medical Association (IMA) President, the Maharashtra Medical Council member and one of the designated appropriate authority who will gather the ground information of suspected doctor. The minister believed that all these measures will certainly result in improving the demographic pattern in state of Maharashtra, as the state is duty bound to prevent female feticide and nurture the girl child further.  The minister opined that it is the duty of good doctors to identify bad doctors involved in unethical acts so that the image of medical faculty enhances at large.
The high level meeting was attended by Additional Chief Secretary Thomas Benjmin, the Law Secretary, the Director of Health Services Dr Satish Pawar, Additional Director Dr Vithal Khanande, the UNFPA representative Anuja Gulati, Maharashtra Medical Council Chairman Dr Kishore Taori, and the other nodal officers.
