Medical institutions to follow 'admission through one CET' rule

By Vikas Vaidya

The decision of Pravesh Niyantran Samiti (Admission Regulatory Committee) asking medical institutions to admit students from one CET only has brought students in trouble. Because of this decision, students of this region may have to go out of this region to take admission, if they dont get admission to the college in their respective regions. Samiti has also made it clear that, the rule would be applicable to other branches.
PNS has received a letter pointing the fact that to fill the vacant seats for admissions to first vear BDS course for the academic year 2013-14 from amonqst the qualified students of NEET-CET 2013 in case vacancies could not be filled in from amongst the students of Asso-CET 2013. Samiti perused the letter under reference. It is stated that the college is located in hilly and rural area. It has been the experience of the college that if the college draws the students only from Asso-CET, seats go vacant for want of enough students. It was therefore necessary for them to draw the students from other sources additionally. Samiti after carefully going through the orders of Supreme Court after deliberations decides that the students can be drawn from the merit lists to be prepared by the college, from amongst the applications received from the qualified students of only one CET.
This has made things difficult as students who have appeared in Asso-CET has to take admission only in the colleges come under the gamut of Association. It means even if they could get admission to the college in their region they have to go to the college situated outside the region. Had NEET and Asso-CET joined, this problem would not have arised.
According to experts, though in the order of Supreme Court it is not mentioned, as discussed, the National Eligibility Entrance Test (NEET) UG will be only for admission to Government Medical Colleges (GMCs). Associations of private medical and dental colleges and Deemed to be institutions will have their own tests as were conducted in the year 2012. At the same time the SC had made it clear that after the second round of admission process, if the seats remained vacant for seven days the seats could be filled through NEET.
