Over 2000 Nursing seats may remain vacant due to ‘admission through one CET’ rule

The decision of Pravesh Niyantran Samiti (Admission Regulatory Committee) (PNS) asking medical institutions to admit students from one CET only has brought students in trouble. Not only that various branches too are facing problems. Due to implementation of this rule, it is feared that over 2,000 seats of Under Graduate Nursing may remain vacant. Because of this decision, students of this region may have to go out of this region to take admission, if they don’t get admission to the college in their respective regions. Samiti has also made it clear that, the rule would be applicable to all branches of medical fraternity. Meanwhile, Indian Nursing Council has extended last date of admission to October 31.
It has been the experience of the college that if the college draws the students only from Asso-CET, seats go vacant for want of enough students. It was therefore necessary for them to draw the students from other sources additionally. Samiti after carefully going through the orders of Supreme Court after deliberations decided that the students can be drawn from the merit lists to be prepared by the college, from amongst the applications received from the qualified students of only one CET.
This has made things difficult as students who have appeared in Asso-CET has to take admission only in the colleges come under the gamut of Association. Had NEET and Asso-CET joined, this problem would not have arised.
As far as the admission to B.Sc Nursing is concerned, there are four colleges run by Maharashtra Government, at Nagpur, Aurangabad, Pune and Mumbai. They have 200 seats of B.Sc Nursing. Most of the students had appeared in NEET. There are 56 private colleges those are running B.Sc Nursing course with the intake of 2290. The admissions to private institutions are done by Asso-CET. Unfortunately less number of students, those appeared in Asso-CET went for B.Sc Nursing, because of which only around 150 seats in B.Sc Nursing in private institutions have been filled. There are about 2100 seats in B.Sc Nursing in private institutions are still vacant. Fortunately the last date of admitting students has been extended to October 31. The notification issued by Indian Nursing Council says, “In continuation of the resolution no 1 of 18th July 2009 regarding last date of admission for ANM, GNM, B.Sc Nursing, PBBS.C (Nursing) and M.Sc (Nursing) should be 30th September every year as per the order of Honourable Supreme Court. Indian Nursing Council reconsidered the resolution and has resolved that above order is for medical colleges and for Nursing, it shall be October 31, every year henceforth.”
