Cancer dept of Nagpur GMCH to get equipment worth Rs 198 crore

By Vikas Vaidya

Taking serious cognizance of rising cases of cancer in Vidarbha, Maharashtra Government has decided to strengthen cancer treatment provided in hospitals run by Government. Accordingly Department of Medical Education in State will be installing ultra-modern equipment worth Rs 198 crore at Radiotherapy department at Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) at Nagpur.
At a high level meeting held at Mumbai, Minister of Medical Education Girish Mahajan discussed various issues related to Nagpur GMCH. Chandrashekhar Bawankule, Nagpur’s Guardian Minister along with Secretary Dr Sanjay Mukherjee, Director Dr Pravin Shingare, Joint Director Dr Prakash Wakode, Dean Dr Abhimanyu Niswade attended it. Initially the amount of Rs 25 crore is approved principally. Mahajan has made it clear that the machines would be installed before the enforcement of Election Code of Conduct for Lok Sabha elections.
The issue that has been haunting Government Medical Colleges in the state is of drug or equipment purchase by Haffkine Bio Pharmaceutical Limited  Corporation. In the purchase of the medical equipment for Cancer department in GMCH, Government will keep Haffkine away from it. The purchase will be done under the supervision of Tata Cancer Hospital, whose Director was also present in the meeting. He assured the Minister that the hospital’s experience of purchasing equipment for cancer treatment would be used.
Government has already sanctioned Cancer Hospital at Chandrapur. There are two charitable hospitals in Nagpur-- one is Rashtra Sant Tukadoji  Regional Cancer Hospital and other is National Cancer Institute--. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis had announced one more Government Hospital for Cancer. Now Government will be pouring Rs 198 crore for the equipment purchase that would help cancer patients to get proper medical treatment in Nagpur itself.
IGGMCH to get MRI soon
The issue of spending Rs 35 crore donated by Shirdi Sansthan to Indira Gandhi Government Medical College and Hospital (IGGMCH) was also discussed in the meeting. Haffkine had said that it would not handle the responsibility of construction needed for MRI. Now, Government is seriously thinking of bestowing the work upon two agencies partly run by Central Government. The department of Radiology at IGGMCH is not getting recognition from Medical Council of India because of not having MRI, the important diagnostic tool. If the MRI is added to its kitty the problem would be resolved. IGGMCH administration did a proper planning of Rs 35 crore received from Shirdi Sansthan, but nothing has happened for the last 4 months. Highly placed sources told ‘The Hitavada’ that Shirdi Sansthan has appealed Government to return the money to it so that it could be used somewhere else. But Government sources has kept mum on the issue.
