The cochlear implant procedure, through which deaf children can be able to hear, has taken momentum with Indira Gandhi Government Medical College and Hospital (IGGMCH) completing 13 such procedures and facility now started at Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) too. With the facility started at both the public health institutions, the poor patients who otherwise were hesitant to go for it because of the cost involved in it, would be benefited largely.

Dr Jivan Vedi, noted ENT Surgeon went to Hinduja Hospital and underwent rigorous training there for one complete year. He did 13 procedures successfully at IGGMCH. The facility has now begun at GMCH too. In both cases Dr Milind Kirtane, pioneer in cochlear implant played the role of great mentor.

The unit at GMCH has fully dedicated OPD set up for assessment of patients for cochlear implant, training and rehabilitation of the patients receiving cochlear implant. Children enrolled for the Assistance to Disabled Persons for Purchase / Fitting of Aids and Appliances (ADIP) scheme run by Central Government for cochlear implant under Ali Yavar Jung National Institute of Speech and Hearing Disabilities (AYJNISHD), Mumbai are provided all facilities and care, and all the protocols are followed. Pre-surgical evaluation of the patients and preparation for the surgery, implant surgery, follow up and rehabilitation is carried out. Dr Jivan Vedi who is trained for performing cochlear implant procedure holds Outpatient Department (OPD) on every Tuesday for the children who suffer from deafness and the one on whom the procedure is already performed. It was well-supported by the present Dean Dr Ajay Keolia. After the implant, training, rehabilitation, follow up care, precautions and periodic assessments are equally important.
