Latest developments regarding removing vacancy in Laxminarayan Institute of Technology and its preparation to get three programmes accredited by National Board of Accreditation (NBA) have created hopes to get Deemed to be University status to it. Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj Nagpur University (RTMNU) has already sent proposal in that regard to Union Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD).
Any technical institute aspiring to get deemed to be university status should have more than 75 per cent posts filled, the institute should have at least four programmes with NBA accreditation and a corpus fund of not less than Rs 3 crore.
LIT has 62 teaching posts sanctioned. Right now it is running with 31 teaching posts. With the initiative by RTMNU Vice-Chancellor Dr S P Kane, 10 posts on contractual basis have been filled. After facing a rap from High Court, the State Government has agreed to fill 17 vacant teaching posts. This will add 27 posts to LIT’s kitty making the total filled posts to 58. This means the vacancy will get reduced to less than 20 per cent.
The issue of four programmes need to be NBA accredited also is being resolved. Dr Raju Mankar, Director of LIT told ‘The Hitavada’, “We have applied to NBA for the accreditation of three programmes. They include Chemical Engineering, Food Technology and Petro-Chemical Engineering.” LIT is contemplating to go for fourth programme after the accreditation of these three. Dr Mankar is leaving no stone unturned for getting the status.
As far as possessing corpus fund of Rs 3 crore is concerned, LIT being conducted institution of RTMNU, the required money can be raised by parent institution. The LIT Alumni Association that is working hard for the upliftment of its almamater also can contribute for the same. Apart from that, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari and Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis have promised to pour quite a big amount. All these things can collectively help in getting deemed to be university status to LIT.
Higher and Technical Education Department of Maharashtra has already made it clear that in the first phase 17 teaching posts including seven of Professor, three of Associate Professor and seven of Assistant Professor would be filled without delay.
Dr S P Kane while talking to ‘The Hitavada’ said, “Union Minister Nitin Gadkari along with the LITAA are taking lot of efforts and University too would provide its full support to this development. If it happens then it will be a proud moment for Nagpur city and University too.”
