No sports facility, no approval to colleges

In a welcoming move, Maharashtra Government has decided not to give approval to new college if it does not have proper sports facility. This has been recommended by the sub-committee of Joint Board of Vice-Chancellors (JBVC) on sports and youth policy 2012 of State. It has also decided that universities should spend its 10 per cent fund for sports facilities.
State Government has announced sports and youth policy 2012 to generate favourable atmosphere for the development of sports culture. The meeting  of JBVC conducted under the  Chairmanship of Governor has decided to implement the policy in universities and colleges in State. For its proper implementation a subcommittee headed by Higher and Technical Education Minister and School Education Minister was formed on January 10, 2013. This sub-committee had made some recommendations and government was considering to implement those.
Kolhapur’s Shivaji University conducts examination of Physical Education for first year students. The students get 10 marks after the successful appearance. The Sub-committee has recommended that this scheme would be implemented in all the universities and colleges of State for the students for all three years of degree course.
The sub-committee has also recommended that sports facilities should be developed in universities, sub-centres and affiliated colleges out of university fund. The sports facilities have been specified in the recommendations. University should have synthetic or normal 400 meter track, multi-utility hall for indoor games, swimming tank as per Olympic standards,  integrated lawn ground for Hockey and Football, grounds and equipment for Basketball, Volleyball, Kabaddi, Kho-kho, Tennis, Handball.
Colleges should have working gym, ground for Football, Hockey, basketball, volleyball, Kabaddi, Kho-kho, Tennis, Handball and facility for indoor games like Table Tennis, Badminton.

- Comprehensive plan and financial structure should be developed for the growth of sports facilities in universities and colleges.
- the government grant received by University should be affiliated to development of sports facilities.
