MCI rejects proposals of new GMCs at Gondia and Alibaugh

The Maharashtra Government received another shock as Medical Council of India (MCI) has rejected the proposals of Government Medical Colleges at Gondia and Alibaugh, the highly placed sources disclosed. After the passage of a year after announcement made by Maharashtra Government to set-up Government Medical Colleges (GMCs) in six places including Chandrapur, Gondia, Nandurbar, Baramati, Alibaugh and Satara, the proposal was waiting MCI’s nod. Had these colleges received permission from MCI, additional 600 MBBS seats would have been available for meritorious students at affordable cost.
Maharashtra Government had sent proposals of new medical colleges at Satara, Nandurbar, Gondia, Chandrapur, Baramati and Alibaugh to MCI for 100 seats each. The colleges were asked to submit required documents at MCI on April 7, 2014. No official from MCI was available to inform on this. Dr Pravin Shingare, Director of Directorate of Medical Education and Research (DMER) told The Hitavada that the colleges did not get a nod yet. As per MCI sources, the proposal would supposed to be considered in next meetings.
But highly placed and reliable sources said that the issue of considering granting permission to new GMCs at Gondia and Alibaugh was on the agenda of meeting of executive committee of MCI. The committee found out that Maharashtra Government has not processed certain documents asked by MCI. The documents were very important and MCI had informed State Government much advanced. On the grounds of casualness showed by State Government, MCI has decided to recommend to Government of India to disapprove the proposals of new GMCs at Alibaugh and Gondia.
In Nagpur’s winter session of State legislature Government had announced opening of three new medical colleges at Gondia, Chandrapur and Baramati with the announcement of four GMCs was already made.
Though, State Government showed callous attitude in case of GMC, Akola, it got respite from Nagpur Bench of Bombay High Court, the Government continued to commit mistakes, it seems. With Gondia and Chandrapur adding to the kitty of Vidarbha the total MBBS seats in this region would have gone to 850.
