“Strong will-power to live can kill even dreaded disease”

                                                                  Dr Shakilur Rahman

By Vikas Vaidya

He was in Class XI, when his uncle diagnosed with cancer. His village was the small one and many  modes of treatment were not available there. Then he strongly felt that he should become a doctor. His that strong determination made him doctor. He feels that people should not term doctors as God. They are human beings. But patients should have strong will power to live.
Dr Shakilur Rahman, specialist in Minimal Invasive Surgery was in city to perform surgery. Dr Rahman has developed expertise in performing surgery through single incision. Presently he is working as Consultant Surgeon at Al Ain Hospital at United Arab Emirates.
“Whenever a patient suffers from any diseases, his strong will power to live does help to recover. Yes, doctor’s efforts, medication, treatment everything is there. But the response to all this comes from within the patient. This response can come only through the persons wish. Most of the time patients and their relatives treat doctor as God. They should not do that. They should consider him as human being and pray to almighty for recovery,” said Dr Rahman while talking to The Hitavada at Getwell Hospital, Dhantoli.
Why Dr Rahman has that positive vibes and why patients feel that they are in safe hands? His friend Anil Bhojak of Nagpur who is Engineer has the answer. “He became doctor with some purpose in his mind. Secondly he still goes to his village Chirkunda in Dhanbad district and perform surgeries on humanitarian grounds.”
Apart from his good human being part, he is expert in his field and rated as very high. The recurrence of hernia after surgery is very high. But Dr Rahman has developed a technique through which the chance of hernia recurrence is almost zero. Some of the patients who got operated for hernia at UAE by some other doctors went to UK after recurrence. They came to Dr Rahman who removed the fault permanently.
Why Single Incision Laparaoscopic Surgery (SILS)? Dr Rahman says that in SILS recovery is fast, patient can go home in the evening or at the most next day morning, less nerves get damaged and it doesn’t affect the looks. Big incision creates scar on the body part. If that body part is visible then people do not feel good, added Dr Rahman.
But performing SILS, experience matters. Dr Rahman has attained that much experience. He has performed over 300 SILS by now since 2010 which is a big number. He is member of European Association of Endoscopic Surgery. Through association also lot of cases were done in UAE.
Dr Rahman also does barriatric or metabolic surgery. According to him, this type of surgery not only reduces weight but the diabetic becomes non-diabetic.
When asked to comment in medical education in India, Dr Rahman has clear views. He said, “The training system is good in India in urban areas but not in rural. Most of the medical colleges are not properly equipped. We need to  revamp our medical education, we need to ask colleges to get themselves equipped properly. It will help students and we can generate quality medicos.”
