Person Safety Device - A ray of hope for bedridden patients

His relatives kept telling him that his grandfather had fallen down from bed several times during late night hours and could not stand up. He remained there for the whole night in that condition. The relatives became tensed as they could not find out the solution. They had to spend sleepless nights. Finally, this young software engineer came out with the solution. He invented Person Safety Device (PSD). He experimented it with his grandfather. It was successful. Everybody at his grandpa’s place heaved a sigh of relief. He has also got the patent for this project.
Chandrahas Kawishwar, a young software engineer of Nagpur did it. “The idea struck my mind that why not prepare such a device that would help everybody at home. I used to see my relatives always tense because of the worry that my grandpa would fell down from bed. At first, only my grandfather was in my mind. But now I am seeing that everywhere people are facing this problem and they don’t have any solution,” pointed Chandrahas
Explaining the concept, Chandrahas said, “A Person safety device is an audible safety device used to help in fall prevention management and to assist in monitoring residents movements. A PSD is a system which includes a sensor pad below mattress and a small box size piece of equipment that activates a signal when motion is detected.”
Person Safety Device system usually consists of two main components: Alarm box and Sensor pad. The alarm box is powered with 12v DC power supply and in-built battery backup on power failure. The alarm box connects to the sensor pad with a long extension cord which activates when Person attempts to move from bed. The alarm box connects to the sensor pad with a long extension cord. When the person attempts to move from bed the alarm box makes a sound with light indications.
Chandrahas said, “Safety is a primary concern for caretakers in a private setting, as well. Protecting loved ones can be a difficult challenge, especially for independent seniors. The device provide a means to allow autonomy, yet alert of an emergency when necessary. The same device that can be used in nursing facilities can also be utilized for hospital use. Usually we see most of the hospitals use CCTV system to monitor the patients’ activity, which is very much expensive and it needs computer operator to handle all these systems. But even though it could not alert patient movement to the attendant or the conditions presented in slides. Suppose device installed on all 4 beds  and alarm unit installed at reception. If patient attempts to move from bed, the alarm would activate at nursing counter. After the alarm, nurse would go and attend the patient.
It is estimated that more than half of the patients in long-term care facilities will encounter one or more falls per year. With these types of accidents being the highest cause of injury, fall prevention is imperative. The device initiates when a person attempts to exit his or her bed, which can reduce hazards before they happen. Often times, falls occur and patients are not attended for hours.
The device is a precautionary tool and address problems immediately. Whether the device is meant for general citizens only? Chandrahas said, “At first, I focused only on my grandpa which was a general case. But then I found even children, the people with dementia or Alzheimer’s also face same kind of problem. I thought over it and finally came to conclusion that it is equally useful for the above category also. These patients get confused and disoriented easily and are prone to wandering. Monitoring their movement is essential to security measures. Not only that even the people having the habit of walking while in sleep.”
Many times due to fear of such falls, the relatives lose sleep. Due to the continues monitoring caretaker may suffer from physical, mental  stress, insomnia, fatigue. But the device has come out for the rescue of these relatives. (Chandrahas can be contacted on +919420409394)
