After a decade long struggle, the long cherished demand of restroring official intake capacitry of under-graduate seats of Indira Gandhi Government Medical College and Hospital (IGGMCH), Nagpur has been accepted by Medical Council of India (MCI). The MCI has officially restored the intake capacity from 60 seats to 100 seats with effect from May 2002. This means, the ad-hoc extension granted every academic year by MCI following judicial intervention and legal battle fought by few good men has finally came to an end and now the original intake capacity has been granted by MCI. With this decision, IGGMCH has became a medical college with full 100 seats of MBBS. This was endorsed by the executive committee of Medical Council of India during its meeting held on January 23.
Now, State Government has to make sincere efforts for retaining 50 additional seats which it got as part of policy decision of Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, but only after a prompt judicial intervention of Nagpur bench of Bombay High Court and Supreme Court which directed MCI to grant 50 additional seats as one time measure to IGGMCH. Under this rule, all 10 years old government run medical colleges with minium intake of 100 MBBS seats got 50 seats more to bridge the people-doctor ratio and to provide more seats to meritorious candidates at affordable rates.
The MCI Executive Committee considered the matter with regard to recognition and approval of IGGMCH for award of MBBS degree against the increase intake i.e. from 60 to 100 granted by Maharashtra University of Health Sciences, Nasik and decided to recommend to
the Central Government recognition for the increased intake from 60 to 100 from the batch of May 2002.
The High Court has recently granted time till Dece 31, 2014 to complete all works pointed out by MCI to remove deficiencies and provide sufficient funds for the purpose.
The committee has also decided to increase of seats in MD (Paediatrics) course at Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College, Sawangi (Meghe), Wardha under Datta Maghe Institute of Medical Sciences, Swangi, Wardha under section 10A of the IMC Act, 1956.
The Post-graduate Committee considered the Council Assessor’s report and decided to recommend to the Central Government to issue letter of permission for increase of seats in MD (Paediatrics) course at Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College, Sawangi (Meghe) prospectively from the academic session 2014-2015. Earlier the department has 4 PG seats in Paediatrics. Now it will have 7 till the first batch admitted against the increased number appears in the final examination of the said course. The institution has been advised to apply for recognition of the qualification for the additional increased intake at the time of first available examination as per the provision of section 11(2) of the IMC Act, 1956
The applications of starting of MD (Anaesthesia) and DA course, Physiology, Biochemistry and ENT at Government Medical College, Akola were rejected.
Meanwhile Government Medical College and Hospital, Nagpur had applied for increase of seats in MD (Forensic Medicine) course under MUHS under section 10A of the IMC Act, 1956. The Postgraduate Committee considered the Council Assessor’s report and observed that PG degree of Dr. S Akhade is not recognized and decided to recommend to the Central Government to issue letter of permission for increase of seats in MD (Forensic Medicine) course from the academic session 2014-2015. It has presently 2 seats, now it will have 5 seats. This number will remain till the first batch admitted against the increased number appears in the final examination of the said course.
Similarly IGGMCH got MD (TB and Respiratory Medicine) course. The Postgraduate Committee considered the Council Assessor’s report and decided to recommend to the Central Government to issue letter of permission for Starting of MD (TB and Respiratory Medicine) course prospectively from the academic session 2014-2015 restricting the number of admissions to 2 students per year, till the first batch admitted appears in the final examination of the said course.
