Again MLAs want Gavit to postpone GMCH review meeting

By Vikas Vaidya

After canceling December 29 visit to review functioning of public health institutions on the request made by public representatives in Nagpur, Dr Vijay Kumar Gavit, Minister of Medical Education has bluntly said no to postpone January 6 meeting to further date to accommodate some legislators. Why should such important meetings be postponed again and again ? asked Dr Gavit.
It is quite easy to blame the Government for problems faced by public healthcare institutions like Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), but last time it was elected representatives who sought postponement. However, many voluntary groups are not happy with Dr Gavit as well and claimed that during last one and half years, the decision making process has come to a standstill and Dr Gavit did not pay enough attention towards GMCH and other hospitals.
During winter session, the legislators from city quite forcefully raised the matter and Government decided to convene a meeting on December 29 with the consent of everybody.
All things were finalised. Dr Vijay Kumar Gavit, Maharashtra’s Medical Education Minister claimed that he was keen to improve the condition of Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Super Speciality Hospital and Indira Gandhi Government Medical College and Hospital (IGGMCH). But on the last moment, his meeting with elected representatives was put off.
Groups like Janakrosh have slammed Dr Gavit for pathetic condition of GMCH and other public health institutions and its convenor Ravindra Kaskhedikar claimed that due to inept handling of the situation, most of the departments of GMCH were facing fund crunch, staff crunch and had to work with obsolete equipments and outdated infrastructure.
Now the much-hyped meeting is re-scheduled on January 6. When The Hitavada contacted Dr Gavit at Mumbai, he told that some of the representatives have expressed inability to present on January 6 also but this time meeting will be held irrespective of personal difficulties of some legislators, he asserted. He wondered as to why local legislators are citing personal functions to delay the meeting. “Though January 6 is Sunday I shall come. Then I am surprised as to why your local MLAs are unable to make it to the meeting ? The problems are related to their own constituencies,” he stated.
The issue of Cancer department, cancer hospital, slow pace of PMSSY, non-sanction of staff at Urology which is hampering the prospects of Kidney transplant, the poor condition of IGGMCH are some issues which will be discussed in the meeting.
In the year 2010 Dr Gavit has brought two major projects of multiutility building and girls hostel that had helped IGGMCH in restoring 40 seats. But the necessary funds were not sanctioned and pace of development left much to be desired, for which many also blame Dr Gavit and DMER administration including Deans of these hospitals for not aggressively pushing the projects.
