Govt drops medical college proposals of Mumbai, Nandurbar

Though Maharashtra Government had planned to set up medical colleges at seven places, in a recent decision, it has to drop the plans for Mumbai and Nandurbar. Now medical colleges will be established at Chandrapur, Gondia, Satara, Baramati and Alibag only.
Maharashtra Government in recently concluded winter session of State legislature had announced opening of three new medical colleges at Gondia, Chandrapur and Baramati. Government had already announced four medical colleges, they include Satara, Nandurbar, Mumbai and Alibag.  In this session, one more college at Baramati was added. A total of 700 seats will be added in the kitty of state medical seats. With the exclusion of two medical colleges, 200 seats would be reduced.
Dr Vijay Kumar Gavit, Maharashtra’s Minister of Medical Education told The Hitavada on phone from Mumbai, “We had planned seven medical colleges. Unfortunately we are not getting land at Mumbai. The college had planned at the premises of G T College but some of the offices of Mantralaya exist in that premises, those can not be removed. Same kind of problem we are facing at Nandurbar also. We do not have any problem at other five places and we are going to send the proposals for inspection by Medical Council of India (MCI).”
As far as Vidarbha is concerned, the condition of all four Government Medical Colleges (GMC) is very bad and worsening with every passing year. There are four Government Medical College and Hospitals including Vasantrao Naik at Yavatmal, GMC at Akola, Indira Gandhi and GMC at Nagpur which together have intake of 500 for undergraduate course (MBBS). Now, Vidarbha is all set to get two more medical colleges- one at Gondia and other at Chandrapur. It means 200 more seats will be added to the kitty of Vidarbha.
