IGNOU to take education to

naxal area using mobile van

By Vikas Vaidya

Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) has decided to penetrate the hitherto impregnable area using modern technology and impart quality education to sections for whom modern education remained a distant dream. Demonstrating its resolve to take education to the doorsteps of socially and educationally most backward area of Gadchiroli (which is hotbed of naxal activity as well), the IGNOU has come out with  an innovative idea of using mobile van.
Dr P Sivaswaroop, Regional Director of IGNOU Nagpur Centre said, “The places like Alapalli, Etapalli, Aheri, in Gadchiroli region are away from the education. IGNOU has decided to reach students who are unable to access quality education and reside in remote places. We will be taking well-equipped mobile van to these areas. This is probably first of its kind initiative taken by any university in the country.”
The teachers of IGNOU will go with the van to these areas and teach the students right at their doorsteps. The mobile van will have laptops, the facility of video conferencing, internet etc. IGNOU conducts many international or national level programmes at metros which can be shown to these students. Secondly, IGNOU invites guests like renowned academicians and they would be connected through video conferencing. The students can participate in that discussion, can ask questions. Mostly the students who take the conventional courses like B.A., B.Com etc can avail this facility. IGNOU is planning to expand this mobile education to Gondia region. The students in these areas are deprived of education. They do not have facilities at their places.
This much needed initiative coming from a central university has been welcomed by academic circles as fearing naxal wrath, very few educationists dared to venture inside naxal dominated area. However, the determination and unconventional way of deploying mobile van, is likely to become an instant hit with tribal students of Gadchiroli district who will get first hand opportunity to interact with renowned academicians and listen to their erudite speeches.
