The stout refusal by Medical Council of India (MCI) to consider application of Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) to increase its Post Graduate seats has created a wave of anger among medicos and political activists who have slammed the MCI for allegedly applying double-standards and meting out step-motherly treatment to government run institution.
On administrative side, the Dean of GMCH has been asked to prefer an appel before MCI to reconsider their decision. Devendra Fadnavis, South  West Nagpur MLA expressed his anguish over MCI’s decision and has urged Vidarbha leadership working in Delhi to approach MCI and ask the authorities to consider the application of GMCH and conduct a fresh inspection for additional PG seats. “I will personally take up this issue with the Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Medical Education Minister and will ask them to lodge a strong protest with MCI for ignoring a legitimate and justified demand made by GMCH,” he told The Hitavada. Every post-graduate seat in private medical college fetches a hefty premium and such denial to public healthcare institute will deprive meritorious medicos from pursuing specialisation, he pointed out while lashing out at MCI for favouring private colleges.
The authorities of GMCH have taken all the precautions to send the all papers including the clarification by Maharashtra University of Health Sciences (MUHS) regarding the timely affiliation for the enhancement of precious PG seats at Nagpur GMCH. It is noteworthy that the enhancement of PG seats are absolutely in public interest as the same are allotted purely on merit through the recently concluded All India Entrance Examination.
The enhancement of MD seats in the Department of Orthopedics, Radio diagnosis, Skin and VD and Forensic Medicine are much desired at the GMCH.  GMCH, Nagpur is the only Medical College in Public Sector in Maharashtra which has been taking all the measures since last eight months to fulfill the parameters of MCI in these departments.
It is reliably learnt that MCI might convene special meeting to reconsider the appeal made by the Dean,GMCH, Nagpur, which has been supported by all the staff members in the college.
Interestingly the inspections in the private medical colleges in Maharashtra are being undertaken at breakneck speed for enhancement of PG seats, as the whole exercise has to be completed before January 30, 2013. Meanwhile, authorities from Indian Medical Association (IMA) are trying through their National leaders to help the GMCH, Nagpur using their good offices at the center.  Dr. Ashok Adhao, Past National President of IMA, HQ stated that if the appeal by IMA fails to bring desired results,  then IMA will not hesitate to file Public Interest Litigation (PIL) in the High Court. PG seats must increase in the GMCH, wherein genuine infrastructure and full time faculty exists, Dr. Adhao pointed out.
