Nagpur city moderately polluted but at risk of respiratory diseases

As far as Air Quality Index (AQI) of Nagpur city is concerned, it is not in danger zone but can not be called as non-polluted. According to statistics regarding pollution level of city registered by Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB), the pollution in city is moderate. According to environment experts, the increasing pollution level in city is attributed to road construction work, Metro rail work and other works of infrastructure development.
On its website MPCB posted details of its survey conducted in  Civil Lines, Divisional Commissioner Office area, North Ambazari road, Hingna Road, Sadar. The survey was conducted between May 4,2018 and June 4, 2018. The survey shows the AQI of various parts of city ranging from 59 to 120 on different days. The fluctuation of AQI varies from area to area.
In Civil lines the AQI ranges between 47 and 81 while the Hingna road premises where maximum road construction and Metro works are going on the range of AQI is between 72 and 121. Even North Ambazari road area too is burdened by Metro work. The range of AQI on North Ambazari is from 75 to 125. The area around Divisional Commissioner office is laden with trees and so the AQI here shows mere 51.
According to MPCB, AQI upto 50 is good, between 51 and 100 is satisfactory, upto 200 is moderate while beyond 300 is poor and between 301 and 400 is very poor. AQI more than 400 is severe. According to remarks on AQI set by MPCB Nagpur’s pollution level is moderate but it is in the danger zone of suffering from respiratory problems.
Dr Rajesh Swarnakar, National Secretary of Indian Chest Society said, “The moderate level of pollution causes breathing discomfort to the people with lung, heart disease, children and older adults. If pollution level goes higher the respiratory illness to the people would go up on prolonged exposure.”
The officials don’t admit but environmentalists say the dust emitting out of rampant road construction and Metro work is helping in rising pollution in city. This is evident when the AQI is less in Civil Lines and more in other areas where the work of cement road construction and Metro is being done on warfooting.
