Rain impacts on flights at Nagpur airport

By Vikas Vaidya

Two morning flights—IndiGo and GoAir— coming to Nagpur’s Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar International Airport were diverted on Friday due to heavy rains resulting in poor visibility. The flights were taken to Hyderabad and later brought to Nagpur after the weather conditions improved. All the evening flights however came on time.
In the morning owing to incessant rains Wardha Road stretch of National Highway no. 7 got submerged under water. The Traffic Control Branch of Nagpur City Police promptly suspended traffic on road from Raddison Square onwards and road ahead was heavily flooded. Air travellers find it difficult to reach airport to board the flight. When the IndiGo flight came to Nagpur from Pune the passengers were asked to go through Sonegaon to reach city. The Pora river that flows through Karve Nagar and adjoining area, overflowed and its water came on Wardha Road.
Sonegaon police station too remained under four to five feets of water for four to five hours. The water logging remained for nearly five hours and during that time access to Sonegaon police station and Airport was cut off. Only when rains took a breather did the road was opened for traffic as water receded. A situation wherein police station itself was cut off from city was unheard off and is quite dangerous because where would citizens look into during such emergencies.
Some of the residents told ‘The Hitavada’ that unplanned Metro work near Hotel Pride aggravated the problem. The footpath adjoining the road from Karve Nagar point till Hotel Pride has been demolished and thus natural flow of water was disrupted. On top of that the Pora River got flooded and water was flowing over the road aggravating the situation on Friday morning.
According to sources from MIHAN India Limited (MIL) that runs the airport the evening flights were on time. There were three flights—IndiGo, Air India and Jet. Barring Air India flight the other two were on schedule, arrived here late. The delay was not due to rain but some other technical reason and travellers well informed of it well in advance.
