Nagpur to have Regional Geriatric Centre

By Vikas Vaidya

Under the National Programme for Healthcare of the Elderly (NPHCE) floated by Central Government, the Maharashtra Cabinet had given approval to set up Regional Geriatric Center at Nagpur’s Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH). Now Government has issued Government Resolution (GR) in that regard. The Center will help to provide universal health facilities to the elderly independently.
The Cabinet had already given approval to State’s fund and creation of posts. The Cabinet also authorized the Directorate of Medical Education and Research for signing Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). The centre will need to create posts for which a proposal will be sent to high level committee for the approval in next three years. The posts will be filled on contract basis and after three years the review of the posts will be held to get those regularised.
Under this programme, the Geriatric Centre will get funds from Central as well as State Government. The Centre’s share will be 60% while State will give 40% funds.
Due to increase in life expectancy and change in life style, the average age of the citizens has increased. As a result, there is a marked rise in the number of senior people in society. The NPHCE is being implemented by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India for special care of the health of elderly people.
When contacted Dr Abhimanyu Niswade, Dean, GMCH told ‘The Hitavada’, “This is a welcoming move and it will help the elderly people. We are ready with a unit where there will be 20 beds kept for elderly people initially. Gradually we can increase the number of beds to accommodate more people. Since the format is yet not fixed, we are not very sure about running it. Otherwise also we treat elderly people with due care.”
